About Us

Medstar was formed as a not-for-profit community service in 1993 when two local hospitals realized that the cost and complexity of advanced life support care were greater than their local communities could support. In the 27 years since its inception, Medstar has grown into the regional leader of 911 EMS delivery, as well as the leader in providing critical care and interfacility transports for healthcare systems and facilities.

Now serving patients and facilities throughout Bay, Ingham, Genesee, Lapeer, Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties, Medstar responds to over 180,000 requests for service annually. Medstar’s Board of Directors is comprised of emergency physicians, nurses, healthcare leaders, and elected and community leaders from throughout our service area. Our Board provides oversight to our leadership team, ensuring a focus on clinical quality, safety, and patient satisfaction.

Medstar is the region’s quality leader because of our unwavering dedication to our patients, our personnel, and the communities who place their trust in us.

In addition, Medstar provides our team members with continuous and ever-evolving training and education, as well as the best clinical equipment and newest emergency vehicles. A recent investment of $7.2 million added 67 new ambulances, cots, and other capital equipment to our inventory, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to providing the best clinical personnel with the best equipment – new from the factory. Today, the average age of our vehicle fleet is 1.7 years.

Medstar is the only EMS provider in the region with board and operational level involvement by physicians and healthcare leaders representing three of the largest health systems in our region – Ascension-Michigan, Henry Ford Health System, and McLaren Health Care.

Strong engagement with these entities, their care providers and our Physician Advisory Council allows Medstar to develop treatment algorithms and patient-centered care techniques that align closely with current and advanced trends in emergency and critical care treatment for patients.

From the physicians and clinicians on our Board of Directors, to our executive and day-to-day leadership team all the way through every member of our organization, we recognize that our first responsibility is to provide the most advanced, compassionate and clinically effective care for Michigan residents and families when we are called to serve.
