Medstar was formed as a not-for-profit community service in 1993 when two local hospitals realized that the cost and complexity of advanced life support care were greater than their local communities could support. In the 30+ years since its inception, We have grown into the regional leader of 911 EMS delivery. Medstar is the leader in providing 911 service for communities, as well as critical care and interfacility transports for healthcare systems and facilities throughout lower Michigan.

Now serving patients, communities, and facilities throughout Bay, Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, Genesee, Lapeer, Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties, Medstar responds to over 190,000 requests for service annually. Medstar’s Board of Directors is comprised of emergency physicians, nurses, healthcare leaders, and elected and community leaders from our service area. Our Board provides direction to our leadership team, ensuring a focus on clinical quality and outcomes, safety, and patient satisfaction.

As a not-for-profit organization, Medstar invests all of income from operations into our clinical equipment, fleet and safety devices, and the development and advancement of our amazing team members.

In addition, Medstar provides our team members with continuous and ever-evolving training and education, as well as the best clinical equipment and newest emergency vehicles. A recent investment of $7.2 million added 67 new ambulances, cots, and other capital equipment to our inventory, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to providing the best clinical personnel with the best equipment – new from the factory. Today, the average age of our vehicle fleet is 1.7 years.

Medstar is the only EMS provider in the region with board and operational level involvement by local physicians and healthcare leaders.

Strong engagement with our Board and our Physician Advisory Council allows Medstar to develop clinical treatment models and patient-centered care techniques that align closely with current and advanced trends in emergency and critical care treatment for patients.
